Unique and Exhilarating - Safari in South Africa
Safari
A Safari holiday is a very unique holiday experience, you should definitely try it at least once. There's nothing more exhilarating than tracking and then spotting one of the Big Five from your land rover. The accommodation is varied - you can choose to sleep under canvas or totally indulge yourself in one of the many private lodges.
If you safari in South Africa, you have two areas to choose from; Kruger National Park is the big one, but you'll find better accommodation in the private Sabi Sands reserve on the Kruger's western boundary.
African weather is every bit as fickle as our own, however generally speaking spring and summer give way to green, lush and thick bush. It is the time of the year where there are many newborn animals. Autumn and winter can be dry, the bush being less dense and waterholes frequented more often due to the lack of water.
The Big Five
Elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard - These were the five species most respected by old-time hunters, today they are still the ones most visitors long to see. Not every game reserve contains them all. Many lack rhinos. In others, it takes luck to find a leopard. But in South Africa's Sabi Sands reserve you can often see all the Big Five in a single day.
Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve is one such lodge where the odds of seeing all the Big Five is practically guaranteed. Indeed, your personal ranger will endeavour to break up your safari so you can concentrate on certain animals each drive - for example, you'll spend a morning tracking leopard and in the evening search out the elephants.
The lodge staff are fantastically friendly - even down to the warm muffins and hot chocolate served mid-way through your morning drive, to the Gin and Tonic served mid way through your evening drive! Meal times are a veritable feast with superb menus served in the lodge dining room.
And when at last you do retire to your suite, you're enveloped in sheer, unadulterated luxury. The suites are generously spacious and immense in stature. Air-conditioning and overhead fans provide welcome respite against the harsh African heat. The breath-taking romantic bathrooms, which include double indoor and outdoor showers, have windows, which open to a glorious view of the passing cavalcade below.
The comfortable beds are complete with beautiful crisp percale cotton linen, down duvets and pillows, and gracious mosquito netting. A special touch to each suite is the perfection of final touches provided - from weather notes and African poems, to a fine array of bath salts and other bathroom amenities.
